Giuseppe Verdi Biography

The joys and sorrows of the Parisian demi-monde during the 1850’s are fully revealed in one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most powerful and popular musical dramas. Featured in the successful Hollywood film “Pretty Woman” with Julia Roberts, La Traviata is the sad tale of Violetta Valery, a popular courtesan, who abandons her life for true love, only to sacrifice her happiness for the man she loves. Soprano Jane Redding (New Orleans Opera, Virginia Opera, Chautauqua Opera) makes her Mobile Opera debut as Violetta Valery, singing the title role for the first time in her impressive young career.

Tenor Chad A. Johnson also makes his debut as Violetta’s ardent admirer Alfredo Germont. Baritone Timothy Jones (Porgy and Bess) completes the stellar cast as Alfredo’s father Giorgio Germont. Stage Director Joseph Bascetta (La Boheme) returns to join Artistic Director Jerome Shannon, the Mobile Symphony and the Mobile Opera Chorus. Sung in Italian with English SuperTitles. Performances on October 25 & 27, 2007 in the Mobile Civic Center Theater at 7:30 PM.
