Synopsis
Umberto Giordano Biography
Premiered in 1896 (the same year as Puccini's La Boheme) Giordano's Andrea Chenier is one of the great masterpieces of Italian romantic opera. Based on actual historical events and figures, Andrea Chenier tells the story of love, political intrigue, false imprisonment and death all played against the dramatic backdrop of the French Revolution's Reign of Terror. A poet in love with a young lady of the aristocracy, Andrea Chenier remains true to his beliefs in defiance of the revolution's worst atrocities, even when it costs him his life and the life of his love Maddalena.
Not seen in Mobile since 1970, Andrea Chenier features tenor Drew Slatton (Tosca, Cavalleria, Il Trovatore) in the title role, with debut artist Carla Thelen Hanson (New York City Opera) as the ill-fated Maddalena de Coigny. Directed for the stage by John Hoomes (Don Giovanni), Andrea Chenier features the Mobile Opera Chorus and Mobile Symphony, conducted by Jerome Shannon. Sung in Italian with English SuperTitles, performances on March 13 & 15, 2008 in the Mobile Civic Center Theater at 7:30 PM.
